What Could Cognition Be If Not Computation . . . Or Connectionism , or Dynamic Systems ? 1

چکیده
Despite the fact that representation is at the center of AI and cognitive science, there is still no consensual model of what representation, thus cognition, is. I argue that there are good reasons for this impasse: none of the approaches to modeling representation that are currently on offer is ultimately viable. I outline several of the deepest reasons for this conclusion, and offer an alternative, pragmatism based, approach to modeling representation and cognition.

What Could Cognition Be If Not Computation ... Or Connectionism, or Dynamic Systems?
Highlights: • Three desiderata for models of representation are outlined. • It is argued that no models on offer satisfy these desiderata. • A pragmatist, interactivist model that does satisfy them is described. • Some comparisons are made with enactive and predictive encoding approaches. Abstract Despite the fact that representation is at the center of AI and cognitive science, there is still ...
متن کاملA Computational Foundation for the Study of Cognition
Computation is central to the foundations of modern cognitive science, but its role is controversial. Questions about computation abound: What is it for a physical system to implement a computation? Is computation sufficient for thought? What is the role of computation in a theory of cognition? What is the relation between different sorts of computational theory, such as connectionism and symbo...
متن کاملAttractive and In - Discrete A Critique of Two Putative Virtues of the Dynamicist Theory of Mind
I argue that dynamicism does not provide a convincing alternative to currently available cognitive theories. First, I show that the attractor dynamics of dynamicist models are inadequate for accounting for high-level cognition. Second, I argue that dynamicist arguments for the rejection of computation and representation are unsound in light of recent empirical findings. This new evidence provid...

Nowadays most of the day today services we receive are based upon computer systems. Services such as information searching or online shopping are considered among the most frequent online information systems' services. Users assess and process the information they receive from information systems. The theory of mind information processing asserts that humans process and analyze the information ...
متن کاملSoft-Assembled Mechanisms for the Unified Theory
Do connectionist and dynamic-systems models converge on a unified theory? The answer depends on the kind of mechanism that the two models attempt to unravel. Two views of mechanism avail themselves to contemporary scientists. One view of mechanism represents cognitive activity as reducible to a cognitive architecture of separate cognitive components. Another view sees cognitive activity as emer...
